Narah and the Unicorn: The Original Narwhal Story

  • Being one of a kind...doesn't mean you're alone. Narah and the Unicorn is a friendship story set in the deep blue sea. It explores unique creatures from all over the world while giving children an origin story for the majestic Narwhal.

  • “Narah and the Unicorn: The Original Narwhal Story presents a new story told in the style of an old-fashioned legend. There is a strong fantasy element to this book and the illustrations make it easy to be carried away by the images of the unique, mythological creatures. The story is powerful, and the illustrations are striking.” --School Library Connection

“An outcast whale discovers her purpose in this gorgeously illustrated fable. Narah is born with a barnacle on her head. Her strange appearance leads other whales to make fun of her, and she has no friends. One day, she spots Peg, a male unicorn, swimming above her, who tells her that being one of a kind is better than being like everyone else. The two become great friends, and before Peg eventually dies of old age, he gives Narah his horn. The whale discovers that, with the horn's magical properties, she can help other creatures in entirely new ways. Authors Roe and Andrews create a story about accepting who you are and loving your differences. Narah, with her humble uncertainty, is a gentle protagonist whom readers will find appealing, and the inclusion of several mythical creatures adds an element of fantasy. Illustrator Grizzle's show-stopping paintings mostly in muted blues, due to the ocean setting are the biggest draw, and readers are sure to be drawn into the surrealistic world. An eye-catching tale of self-acceptance.” --Kirkus Reviews

“Narah and the Unicorn is a beautiful piece of children's literature with a book that parents will appreciate as much as their kids. Bobby Roe and Zack Andrews have done a fantastic job in creating a fictional inception story for an animal most won't even know exists (I'll admit that I didn't). The format is exceptional and the white typeset of text against the rich colors of the illustrations just looks so sharp and gorgeous. The illustrations themselves are phenomenal. David Grizzle is a wildly talented artist and painter, bringing to life Narah, Peg, Peg's friends, and all the treasures of both sea and land. My daughter was equally captivated by the story and its artwork, only willing to pull away from it when we began researching narwhals....which happen to be her new favorite animal.” --Readers' Favorite
